North Kingstown, Rhode Island
North Kingstown, founded in 1674, is the fastest growing Township in the State of Rhode Island. With a population of 35,320, and it’s location near the mouth of Narragansett Bay, water activities are an important part of life. Because of its location and natural harbor, North Kingstown is famous as a summer resort and haven for pleasure boaters.
With a past steeped in history, enchanting old churches, quaint colonial homes and Shoppe’s, North Kingstown is an example of traditional life in New England. Among the many colonial sites still standing are Smith’s Castle and Gilbert Stuart’s Birth Place. Rolling Rock and Queen’s Fort, two of the Town’s landmarks, indicate the strong presence and tradition of the Narragansett Indians in Rhode Island.
Wickford Village, famous for its annual art festival, contains an impressive collection of houses dating back to the 18th century which is most likely the largest concentration of colonial homes in such a small space in the nation.
North Kingstown can be reached by Route 1 or Interstate I95 to Route 4 making it a 25 minute commute to Providence. With its ever growing industrial park at the site of the closed Quonset Point Naval Facility, North Kingstown is a major job producing community that is continuing to increase the Town’s growth and economic development.
