It’s that magical time of year again when kids are heading back to school. The freedom and fun of summer are coming to an end and it’s important to get back into a routine, for both kids and parents!
Organization and time management tend to be the key for a less stressful transition back into the classroom. Whether your child is just starting their educational journey or heading into their senior year, here are some tips to get going on the right foot.
- Get a Routine! I know, easier said then done. But give yourself a break and know that it can’t always be followed. Life is crazy and unpredictable and it’s just as important to go with the flow. But kids (and parents) like to know what to expect. My daughter is a prime example of this. Her second question every morning is “Where am I going/what am I doing today”? Our weeks run much more smoothly if we talk about the week ahead of time.
- Keep Supplies Organized – and in one place. Whether it’s a designated desk at home or the kitchen table there are great and inexpensive storage options available to help.
- Pregaming – Spend time each night getting organized for the next day. Get their school bag packed with everything necessary including completed homework, prepare lunches and clothes, and have a breakfast plan. Creating a calm and unrushed environment in the morning helps everyone have a less stressful day.
- Bedtime Routine – For some of us parents it’s the battle of all battles. We all know that kids need plenty of sleep but they don’t always agree. Take of few nights (or a week) before school starts and gradually lower their bedtime. This just might save some arguing and give you parents a little more relaxation time yourself.
So, here’s to a great, productive happy school year. Keep a positive attitude, don’t be too hard on yourself and remember, summer will be back before we know it!
